From Lord of the Rings to Lizzie Bennet

If you don’t watch much youtube, you’re seriously missing out. There are some AMAZING geeky videos on YouTube. I mean, you can find anything on YouTube from fan videos of peoples favorite pairings set to popular music, to instructional videos on how to do, well practically ANYTHING! But the web series videos, and the geeky tribute videos are my favorites.

So, here I am to give you a little taste of some of the awesome you m ay be missing on the interwebz.

First, we have Hunter Davis (whom I have had the pleasure of meeting BTW, and will be interviewing shortly) who has not only some of the funniest videos I’ve ever seen, but his webseries The Dark Knight Retires is one of the most original and epic geeky concepts I’ve ever seen. But what turned me on to his YouTube channel was the following video:

Yes. You just watched a video with the sweetest faced actor in the history f ever doing one of the BEST Sir Ian McKellan impressions in the history of ever doing Sir Mixalot’s “Baby Got Back.”

But wait!!!! There’s MORE!

Just the other day a dear friend on Facebook linked me to another amazing Lord of the Rings parody video and I HAVE to share that with you as well.

Yes. That was a guy singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables (one of my all time FAVORITE musicals) as GOLLUM. GOLLUM PEOPLE!!! And he did a fantastic job too! I watched this and damn near spit out my coffee!! But then, everyone who knows me in person knows I am a SUCKER for hilarity. One of the best ways to get to me? MAKE. ME. LAUGH. It’s not that hard to do, seriously. I’m an easy mark. But it has to be genuinely FUNNY. I don’t laugh at just everything. Just the really funny stuff.

Like the recreation of CAPTAIN PLANET! You think I’m kidding? Nope.

That fan made trailer was made by Jay Diaz and stars Matt Kohler (whom I have ALSO met and will be interviewing shortly as well!) as both Captain Planet and Captain Pollution. Pretty damned awesome, isn’t it??? And he’s a SUPER cool guy in person. Just like Hunter Davis is. Truth.

Now my next web series is truly masterful. This series was developed by Hank Green (the younger brother of the seriously awesome young adult author John Green, who if you haven’t read YOU MUST. An Abundance of Katherines and Looking for Alaska are two of my favorite YA books in the world.) and Bernie Su.

The series stars Ashley Clements, Mary Kate Wiles, Laura Spencer, and Julia Cho as The Bennet sisters and Lizzie’s BFF Charlotte. It’s a modern day retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my favorite stories. I first fell in love with Lizzie and Darcy when my sister in law sat me down and had me watch the entire BBC Miniseries staring Colin Firth as Darcy. I was HOOKED. For life. I mean who need cocaine or meth or heroin? I’m addicted to literature (and hot British actors in Jane Austen movies)!!!

You’d think it would be hard to have the story of Pride and Prejudice updated to modern day America, but they make it so work. It’s truly amazing. They even found a way to incorporate the marriage obsessed Mrs. Bennet and the laid back Mr. Bennet among the amazing cast of characters. And it all works! It just does.
