I know a lot of you may have seen this floating around the internet. It’s a youtube video by some hard core gamer girls that reflect on the nature of sexism in gaming.
If you don’t think sexism in gaming happens, you don’t game enough. I, as a female gamer, have been propositioned by guys while gaming based solely on my avatar. I have more than one avatar. One of them is a female human rogue in the game of World of Warcraft. On this specific avatar I have been propositioned by guys. They want to know if I have a boyfriend. They want to know how old I am. They won’t leave me alone until I report them to the powers that be at Blizzard.
Now, I don’t get harassed on my male characters. I don’t get harassed on my characters that are not human.
I am NOT my avatar. She is a made up character that does not exist. She’s hot. That’s cool. She’s drawn that way, just like Jessica Rabbit. Saying I’m hot based on a drawing and a fake persona is like believing that a huge purple dinosaur is real.
Oh, whoops, you thought Barney was real? My bad. 😉
But my point is that gamer girls are just that. GAMERS. Just like the guys. I know guys who play dwarves. Does this mean they’re short and hairy? Um, no. I play a dwarf too. A female one. She’s fake too. I have a guy gamer friend (the one who convinced me to start playing WoW in the first place) who has female characters. He likes them. That’s totally cool. When I informed him I was being harassed by the same guy several times, he told me to tell him I was a dude. I thought it was funny.
But then I wondered, why should I have to? Why should I have to lie just so I cam be left alone to do my questing and leveling?
Point is, I shouldn’t.
And I wonder how much these few guys know about the culture they’re in. I mean, have the heard of the all girl gaming teams that can pwn your ass? What about the Frag Dolls? They have been around since 2004. Yeah they are promoted by Ubisoft. Yeah. All of them are super cute in their own way. And Yeah. They can all PWN YOUR ASS.
Felicia Day? Gamer. She’ll PWN YOUR ASS TOO. And in her Amazingly Awesome show called The Guild she is one of a group of Guildies that come in all shapes and sizes; all colors and genders. It is a wonderful representation (if not an incredibly humorous one) of gamers.
Just because I am built a little different than the majority of gamers, that doesn’t mean I can’t pwn you.
And just because you want to be a douche who discriminates doesn’t mean I have to let you. And I will stick up for any gamer who is getting harassed by ANYONE on the internet because of their race, creed, religion, color, gender or sexual orientation.
I fully agree with the Gamer Girl’s Manifesto.
I am a woman. I am a geek. I am a gamer.
Special thanks to the ladies that produced this video, to Epic Ponyz and The Mary Sue for having the guts and the awesome to post this on their websites and stick up for gamers. ALL gamers. You guys ROCK!
