The Seeking Bazinga Holiday Hiatus has come to an end! It’s a New Year and the “Holidays” are officially OVER! Whew! Was it as exhausting for you, my wonderful nerdlings as it was for me? I feel like I’ve run a three month marathon going from Thanksgiving, to Christmas to New Years with such fervor!
2013 was an interesting year, dontcha think? As mentioned on Geek Exchange, the year started off with the big news that J.J. Abrams would be taking the reins of the Star Wars franchise and directing Star Wars, Episode VII. This was good news for Geeks everywhere, as we loved what he did with Star Trek. A collective sigh was heard round the Nerd Verse.
February brought in an exclusive interview with Ivan Van Norman on the brand new hit series on TBS, King of the Nerds (which by the way, starts its second season January 23, 2014. Check your local listings!) and an article on how nerds do Valentine’s Day.
In March, there was Paley Fest, where this little blogger got to go see the Walking Dead Panel and the Big Bang Panel, where I got to ask Kaley Cuoco a question and get on the Hulu Plus video of that panel! Yes, I’m still amazed at this. It was a huge deal for me.
There was also, Oz The Great and Powerful, and one of the greatest things, getting to meet Kevin Grevioux, the creator of the Underworld franchise. Now THAT was not only informative, but frankly, AMZEBALLS. He was just, such a nice guy and had such a wealth of knowledge to impart on those of us eager to learn. And I learned SO much. I’m forever grateful I was lucky enough to attend this event!
In April, my good friend over at What A Nerd Girl Says, got to meet Cassandra Clare, which was a HUGE deal for her, let me tell you. She even got to interview her. Another momentous occasion for her!
For me, I read two books that changed my life: The Shadow of the Wind and The Diviners. These two books really made my year. Which is interesting as the last half of the year, I haven’t done nearly enough reading. This shall be fixed in 2014. :)
It was also the 2nd Annual Harry Potter Roller Skating Night! Which for any local (Los Angeles based) HP nerds, is a HUGE deal. This event, put on by my brilliant friends and geek cohorts of the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army, is not something that should be missed. Seriously. It’s EPIC.
May flowers also brought Star Trek Into Darkness. Which was pretty much what my month of May was all about.
June gloom in LA brought out the Man of Steel. And this was pretty much the only blue in the skies of Los Angeles the entire month.
July is always a special month, as one of the biggest geeks I know has a birthday. And, no, I’m not talking about Wil Wheaton. He’s one of the biggest geeks sure, but I don’t know the guy personally. Epic though his is. No, it’s my big brother’s birthday! And, yes, he’s kind of the biggest geek I know.
But July is ALSO my favorite author’s birthday. J.K. Rowling! And of course, it’s HARRY POTTER’s birthday as well! So, yeah, July is a huge month for all nerds.
Also because Comic Con in San Diego happens, and this is the high point of geekdom for many. Including myself, even though I was not able to make it last year! But this year? I’ll be there, tickets or no tickets, because the stuff you can do outside the convention center is pretty amazeballs now. They’ve expanded the con to many of the surrounding hotels and this makes it easier for people who weren’t quick enough on the ball (or didn’t get press passes again) to enjoy one of the biggest geek fests in the country!
However, I may not have had the chance to go to SDCC last year, but while my friends were waiting in line for over 8 hours to get in to panels, I waited in line to get to see the ever gorgeous, always funny as hell, JOHN BARROWMAN AND HIS HILARIOUS SISTER CAROLE. Yeah, missing SDCC was kind of okay after this. Sincerely.
August saw the announcement of Ben Affleck as Batman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman (slated for 2015). There was much controversy and much discussion over this choice, as you well remember! The world was set a-twitter. And the Twitterverse EXPLODED!
For Whovians, the biggest news ever came out…the casting of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor! This caused as much internet fervor as well….anything. The Whovians are geeks to their core, and this news was HUGE. We will miss you so much Matt Smith!!!!
The Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army Book Club was also named one of the best book clubs in Los Angeles! Talk about monumental! This was just fabulous news and I know my good friend, Jessica Zipay (who is our fearless bookclub leader) was over the moon!!!
September and October always bring with them the return of TV! The new seasons of older and beloved shows and the new and exciting (and sometimes not so exciting) new shows. And this year was no different.
We also had Stan Lee’s Comikaze, an ever growing convention here in Los Angeles, in November which was the kick off to the Holiday Season, seeing as it happened the day after Halloween! So, yeah, all those costumes were not slaved over in vain! Though, for cosplayers, they are never made in vain, they are made with flair and utter chaos as we saw during the Heroes of Cosplay (a new show that aired on SyFy)!
For me, the year of geek ended early (which it actually didn’t as the whole news about Wonder Woman was all over for two months) but it did for me for several reasons, mostly that the holiday season has me running around like a chicken with my head cut off and I was unable to participate in much of the phenomenal geekiness going around. This year, I plan to plan better. There is no excuse for leaving your devoted readers in the lurch and not announce Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, because you had to make cookies, now is there? Absolutely not!
So, this year will see even more from us here at Seeking Bazinga! More posts, more news, more everything! And I hope you will all join me for the wildest ride in the wilderness, or at least in the geekverse!
Coming up in January you will see daily posts, Movie Mondays, Geek Trax Tuesdays, Geek of the Week Wednesday, TV Thursdays and so on! If you have any suggestions for any kind of weekly, daily, or monthly events for us here at Seeking Bazinga, I would simply LOVE to hear them!
Here’s to a fascinating and fabulous 2014, filled with more geeky awesomeness than ever!
As Commander Sulu said, May Your 2014 be quite engaging. And remember….don’t Klingon to the past!
