This has been floating around the interwebz for a while. It is epic. As a geek girl, I whole heartedly aprove of this and wish I had been able to participate. I love how they got people like Wil Wheaton to join in the campaign, because as we all know, he is a HUGE advocate for geeks of all kind.
And The DoubleClicks, who are singing the song? They are AMAZING. You have to watch more than once because you need to know the lyrics to the song, as well as read all the signs the geeks in the video itself are holding up.
Along with Wil, they have Amy Berg, who has written for shows like Leverage and Eureka, which are both HUGE geek shows; John Scalzi, the author of a myriad of sci-fi novels; Adam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, one of the nerdiest shows to ever hit the airwaves; Paul Sabourin and Storm DiCostanzo – of Paul and Storm fame (who are epic btw) as well as countless other AMAZING and well known geeks who support the cause of girls being just as legit in their geekdom as guys are.
I’ve been a Trekkie for as long as I can remember. That’s how it started for me. I watched Star Trek. I loved Star Wars. My brother and I watched all the old school cartoons – Thundercats, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Justice League, as well as other nerdy TV shows. Who remembers BUCK ROGERS???? And the Original Battlestar Gallactica?? I watched ALL those shows.
I just didn’t truly ACCEPT my geek until my mid to late twenties when I joined the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and hung out with other major geeks like me. I mean, I should have known, I come from totally geek parents who helped keep Star Trek on the air in the 60’s for cryin’ out loud! My dad read the dictionary for FUN as a kid.
Yeah, I was destined to be a geek. And I’m fucking proud.
Bazingirl, card carrying, Pong level GEEK.
